Designing Laser Files- SVG's Digital Downloads

Hey gang, let's talk digital files for laser users.  I know these files are scalable to what ever size you need, but honestly when you are designing something like a gift card holder you better have the size dialed in to the file.  Not just type it on the file description.  

Hi, I'm Steph blogger, laser owner and digital file designer.  I absolutely "dislike" finding a file I love on Etsy, only to need to work on the file to get to where it is cuttable.  AM I RIGHT?  You know this if you are a laser owner.  

Not all designers are equal when it comes to plug and play.  I try really hard to make sure when you import a file into your software like lightburn its plug and play.  You download the file, import it into the software and it should be ready to just cut.  Unless you need to scale it smaller for a specific project you are wanting to  make and it is creatively different. But if you buy a gift card file from me, it is sized for just that. You shouldn't need to scale it.  Gift cards are universal size.  2.25x3" usually is what is needed in the inside where the card fits. 

Places like Etsy are filled with designs that need tweaking. Make sure the designer has good reviews and if you find a designer you love, stick with them.  I have even reached out to them with a design in mind and let them make it.  Sometimes they charge a fee if it is exclusive but if they can list and sell it, then it isn't going to cost you anything extra. 

If you have issues by all means contact the seller.  Work with them, but if your situation isn't resolved know that there isn't much you will be able to do except leave a fitting review. Digital files are non-refundable due to the nature.  But most sellers try, they don't want negative reviews. 

I only recently began listing and selling my files.  I use to keep them to myself, it kept my designs under wraps.  Eventually they got out, but I moved onto bigger better by then  and I am always designing custom stuff for clients.  You can find my digitals >>here <<  and I hope you enjoy them.  I only sell 100 of any one design and I offer commercial rights  you can read my full copyright and permissions >> here.<<    Some designers don't take the time to test files, how do you know?  Look at reviews. Ask questions before you buy them.  I usually but files in groups that show finished projects using them.  It speaks loudly to how usable a file is.  But really for me, I look to see if the designer has a website selling the finished project.  If they don't have a ton of reviews its hard and you might be missing out on a great file if you don't do a little research.  Don't be fearful to try a new designer just be mindful.  I sell a tent sign file and have sold it 25 times and only have a few reviews.  But go to the actual item I take orders for and you can see how many times I have use the file to make tent signs for clients.  I had a laser owner who bought it and had a small machine, but after reaching out to me, I explained it is scalable she was able to use it to make her sign and was thankful she reached out. 

I hope this article isn't scaring you from finding designs and creating a brand with your laser. One tip is look how many times it has been sold, downloaded, ect., look how many they sell it to can also tell you how many other people in your industry own that design, so don't fear a low number it can bring good money if you take a chance.  

I am designing some vases now that will come out for spring, mother's Day and weddings.  They are always nice for friends mending from surgery or in the hospital.  They'll sure bring a smile to their faces.  I will also be selling the finished items so if you don't have a laser an need a gift be sure to watch for those coming soon to seasonal items.
